Ruinous ghosts
The rediscovered identity of the wood sculptures of The Lamentation for Christ and of the lost organ shutters for the altar of the Battuti painted by Pordenone.
by Claudia Palazzetti
In describing the XVI-century sculpture known as The Lamentation for Christ found in Venzone, Claudia Palazzetti says that it can be considered as the "manifesto of the vulnerability of wood sculptures", owing to the scarce and unprecise information there is about this work and to its state of preservation. With her detailed analysis of the Lamention, Palazzetti engages the reader in a journey through XVI-century sacred art, by providing him with the elements needed to interpret both the sculpture and to become acquainted with the Altar of the Battuti in the Church of S.Maria del Gonfalone, which the sculpture was a part of, together with the now lost organ shutters painted by Pordenone. The reconstruction of the vicissitudes of this sculpture is intimately linked to those of the Confraternity and of the Church of S.Maria and thus represents a useful aid not only for experts but also for those keen on learning about the transformations this work of art underwent through the centuries and a bit of Venzone's history between the XVI and XIX centuries.
